Anna is able to offer translation workshops to children in the last two years of primary school across the island of Ireland.
The workshops are for children who may not have learned any other language so far – though it’s no disadvantage if they have! A translation workshop can open up new worlds to children, teaching about difference, improving literacy and creative skills – and it is fun! For teachers: the workshop is specifically designed to meet fundamental educational objectives.
Fiona Gillen, teacher of a 5th Class at St Catherine’s School in Dublin which hosted two workshops on European Day of Languages praised the project:
“It was a really well-structured and engaging workshop – there was so much opportunity for the children to talk and puzzle things out for themselves…They went from blank looks when Anna read the book in French to independently translating it into lovely, storybook English.”
The workshop was also enjoyed by a 6th Class at Scoil Naomh Molaise in County Sligo, and at Drumlins Integrated Primary School in County Down.
The “Translators in Schools” film exposes the philosophy and methodology behind the workshops.
